Welcome to the 2010 St. George’s Archaeological Field School Webpage

The field school will include five weeks of archaeological training in survey and excavation techniques.

Excavations will take place at the site of Whitehall in the heart of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of St. George’s and archaeological survey will take place along Bermuda’s North Shore, the site of 18th century ship-building.

Students will be required to attend classes 40 hours a week (Monday-Friday) with most of that time spent on site during excavation. This class will involve moderate to strenuous physical activity. Students also will gain experience in the National Museum of Bermuda Archaeology Lab, spending time processing and learning to identify artifacts. Students will be required to keep a journal of their field, lab, and seminar work.

Throughout the five-week sessions students will attend lectures from local historian and archaeologists on the latest research being completed on the island. These lectures will also cover relevant literature in archaeology, colonial history, and archaeological interpretation. The program also includes field trips to the island’s important historical sites.
